How Can Change be Fun?

Click on the video above or here to see this 2-minute clip about how turning a task into a game or something fun incites change.

Drama.

We’re surrounded by it. The daily news, Hollywood, cheesy and far-from-reality-shows…Oh, and that doesn’t even include family drama, which tends to account for the bigger chunk of our drama pie.

It’s no surprise, consequently, that when I attempt to create change in my life (food choices, starting an exercise routine, re-organising my space, etc.), I often get off to a strong procrastinating start, thinking “I just don’t have the time, money, energy (fill in the drama-related blank) to deal with the struggle of changing”.

It implies that change is boring, tedious…Not fun.

So, why can’t change be fun? Wouldn’t that ensure a stronger commitment on our part? Fun and enjoyment are, in fact, what change psychologists coin with successful change.

Try asking yourself this question:

How can I turn (fill-in-the-blank goal), which I’ve been resisting, into something fun and playful?

Rewards can make a task fun.

Can you turn a research project into a game show?

Is it enticing to intersperse a de-cluttering session with 30-second “good riddance” dances?

What are some of your ideas (Don’t be shy to to comment below)?

How can you apply this to a project or task you’re working on now?

Goddess School for the Creativity-hungry Soul

Funky Goddess Journey Awaits

Funky Goddess Journey Awaits

I am, as you likely are, an inspiration junkie. I LOVE exploring new personal development tools, ideas and courses.

Not so long ago, I came across Goddess Leonie‘s website, and immediately felt blessed to discover this spunky, real and adorable muse.

I heart Goddess Leonie :-)

Since I always prefer to get first-hand feedback and recommendations from respected friends before signing up for courses, I like to offer the same useful recommendations to others.

So…(drum roll), I am excited to present you to Goddess Leonie’s new Goddess School.

The Goddess School is an online sacred space with e-courses to help you discover the creative, wise, joyful Goddess in you! The next term begins September 28, and there are two e-courses you can enrol in to be a part of this amazing experience. There is the Creative Goddess e-course to help you explore creativity as a joyful, spiritual practice, and the Making Space for your Goddess to Shine e-course which helps you to divinely declutter and magically space clear your home.

These courses come with lots of goodies: downloadable meditations, videos, guidance and projects. You also get access to a private online message board to share your journey with other Goddesses on the journey (if you’re like me and grow exponentially through group journeys, this is a big plus).

I definitely recommend any of Goddess Leonie’s transformative courses and the cool freebies on her website.

Cheers to your creative living!

Say it: I am Wonderful

I often like to write and talk about gratitude and the power of acknowledging goodness all around us.

After all, if most of us are striving for personal balance in our lives, what better way to achieve this than to counterbalance all the negativity we are bombarded with on a daily basis: on the news; radio; outbreak scares, and an implicit belief that it’s pompous to toot your horn.

Side note: I love the idea behind a cool book title about “toot’n’ yer horn without blowing it” (actual book title: Brag!: The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn without Blowing It).

Ok, back to the point I was making.

I’ve posted this video after receiving the link from Danielle LaPorte, because it inspired me to think about how easily we tend to criticise, to fear and to look for flaws in life; yet, many of us find it difficult to give ourselves a wholehearted tap on the back or to look in the mirror and genuinely say: “I am wonderful. I am so talented. I love who I am…”

But rather than explore the deeply rooted “why’s” of that, I prefer to encourage you to just do it, regardless of your resistance and past trauma – say it right now: “I am wonderful”… Say it with meaning…Imagine what it looks and feels like, to feel wonderful about yourself.

Dare to imagine and tap into your greatness, with this simple act, which reminds us that by allowing ourselves to be wonderful, we give everyone around us permission to do the same.

Amen!

Do it…NOW

You can do it!

You can do it!

Do you ever find yourself suddenly doing the dishes, tidying up or pretty much anything BUT work on a desirable goal once you’ve decided to create change in your life. Ah, resistance!

Whenever I notice myself avoiding or resisting acting on something I actually want to do, I pay close attention to my excuses or even valid reasons for why I just can’t start now: feeling too unexperienced, knowledgeable or equipped; not knowing where to start; perfectionism (you know, the “I’ll start working on this project when I have all the possible information, skills and expertise to get it right…the first time around” kind of thinking), etc…

(Fill in the blank here with your own reason for resisting working towards a desired goal)

Although understanding where your resistance is coming from, sometimes the most effective or even only prescription for getting started is simple: Do it…NOW!

Using a small steps approach is all about this: to get moving in a direction you value, just start somewhere and fuel up on the energy and satisfaction of being one, two or three steps closer to being where you want to be, rather than being where you were 10 years ago: still thinking about how to go about it the “right” way.

When we feel a little stuck in life, chances are that we are stuck in “analysis paralysis”, an “all-thinking-no-movement” syndrome. Small and directive action, regardless of how small, is an amazing anti-stagnation potion that can quickly lift a dark mood and negative spiral thinking.

So, with this is mind, what is a goal or project you’ve temporarily abandoned or been avoiding lately? What is one thing you can do right now to get you one step closer to manifesting this goal?

Just do it

If you’ve come up with an answer, you’re halfway there. Now (yes, I mean NOW) do it! I mean it. Step away from the computer, hang up the phone, close your door and allow yourself 5 to 10 minutes to ACT on your intention.

NOW.

Creating a Dream Board…Manifesting Your Dreams!

What’s a Dream Board?

Also called a Vision Board or Treasure Map, A Dream Board is basically a collage or other form of visual representation of your goals and dreams.

It is so much more than a creative project – it’s a focusing and dream manifestation exercise.

Why make a Dream Board?

Some of the benefits:

  • Clarify your vision of where you want to be
  • Experience goal setting – the fun and inspiring way!
  • Focus your thoughts and energy on your desires
  • Program thoughts that support and nourish your dream
  • Increase motivation and commitment to achieve a desired goal

How to Make a Dream Board

(Adapted from: WikiHow)

1.         Gather a variety of magazines, including but not limited to subjects of interest, or search for specific images on http://www.images.google.com (or both). Some suggestions include: money/wealth, career, sport, adventure, health, cooking, spirituality/philosophy, fitness, fashion, travel etc.

2.         Select random pictures that get your attention or that generate enthusiasm. Allow your mind to wander and follow your instinct. Find bright, colorful images that make you feel fantastic or get you thinking about what life could be like if it were you in that picture. Try to minimize words because images are often more expressive, powerful and speak more to our subconscious.

3.         Get a hold of either a Bristol board, magnetic board or a large blank painting canvas – whatever inspires you most and can be put up for you to observe on a regular basis.

4.         Schedule some time in your diary or to-do lists for cutting and gluing – yes, schedule it! Use as much time as you need…but be aware of perfectionism or other blocks if you keep procrastinating getting started on the collage part.

5.         Play some inspiring music, make yourself a favourite drink or treat and get started!

6.         Cut out the pictures (allow yourself to cut outside the lines if you feel like it!) and stick them on your board. Paste over any faces of the people you have cut out. This is *your* dream board!

7.         On the bottom of your board (or on a place that feels right for you), write the following sentence:

“This, or something better, now manifests for me in totally satisfying and harmonious ways, for the highest good of all concerned.”

8.         Place the dream board in a highly visible place to ensure that you look at it at least twice a day for about 5 minutes. Enjoy the images, enjoy your work and imagine yourself leading the life that is in your dream board.

You will soon notice that you’re starting to achieve some of the dreams you have stuck on your board.

Things You’ll Need

  • Your choice of either: A large piece of cardboard, Bristol board, painting canvas, cork board (you get the picture – ha ha)
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape (or both)
  • Paint, markers, stickers or whatever other materials you feel inspired to use
  • Music and treats, if you need an extra incentive J

      Overcoming procrastination…Let’s get started already!

It’s a job that’s never started that takes the longest to finish. – J.R.R. Tolkien

Last night, I was staring blankly at my agenda, dreading the usual question I pose before writing a to-do list: “How do I want to live purposefully today?” I write “blankly” because a bout of resistant procrastination had set in, and my motivation was a little testy. I knew what I “should’ be writing on my rather task-oriented list, but a rebellious part of me played dumb and mindlessly stared at my so-far blank sheet of paper.

I heard a whiney voice inside me protest whenever I thought of what should go on my to-do list.

Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire. – Reggie Leach

Rather than put my pen down to go raid my pantry for treats (read: procrastinate), I re-framed my initial question to: “What’s one very small thing I can do to move ahead in my project and / or (notice the option here!) to feel good about myself?

      Then, two things happened:

      1. I had fun brainstorming on the endless possibilities of small steps
      2. The 2-in-1 question lead to the creation of a nifty 2-column to-do list:
      • Not-so-exciting-but-a-priority tasks
      • Fun Stuff / Rewards“

And suddenly, I observed my resistance melting and giving way to enthusiasm!

This was just the kind of motivation  I needed to propel into purposeful action, and it was as simple as:

        • Asking small questions (and by-passing the overwhelm created by big questions and big steps)
        • Making FUN a priority (but never forcing it)
        • Using fun as a reward and motivation to get the other stuff done
        • Resisting the urge to weigh down my to-do list with too many items (I kept it light baby!)

In case you’re curious how I followed through after this simple exercise, I’m happy to report that today was very fruitful and fun. I got ahead on my project and got to play!

What’s one itty bitty thing you would feel good about doing today? And how would you like to reward that effort?

        • Reading a good book, absolutely guilt-free?
        • Treating yourself to a luxurious coffee?
        • A simple but well-deserved pat on the back…or maybe a celebratory jig?
